Embrace the suck

By Cassandra Tyndall

When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Then there are times when you’re just not tough enough. We all have to choose our battles and this week’s skies emphasize that. The planetary combination will highlight whether you need to rest, especially if you’ve had your nose to the grindstone for long enough. On the flipside, if you’ve not risen to the occasion, there will be consequences for a lack of follow through.

When Mars and Saturn join in a conflicting relationship, I’m reminded of the military phrase “embrace the suck.” We can all do hard things, but where most of us fail is that we give up too soon or we choose not to start. There are always some things about life that are simply unpleasant, but you just have to put your feelings to one side and push through it. This week is likely to be one of those occasions.

My best suggestion is to remember that tough times don’t last, but tough people do! If there is a task you’ve been avoiding, tackle it this week while the sky is on your side. Chances are, it wasn’t as bad as you thought.

My son was barely 10 years old when we moved into our most recent home. On the day we arrived, I told him to get on his bike and ride around the neighborhood to look for kids to play with. Without concern or care, he promptly did just that.  I knew when he didn’t come…

Black willow provides many ecological benefits

I often spot black willow trees as I’m kayaking along a riverbank or lakeshore. While perhaps less picturesque than its (non-native) cousin the weeping willow, black willow is native to the Northeast and provides a host of ecological benefits. Willow trees are in the Salix genus, along with pussy willow and more than 20 other…
