Tips on deciding how, who to adopt into your home

With puppy and kitten season fast approaching, the Rutland County Humane Society (RCHS) wants to point out a few things to consider before getting one. With puppies, there comes a lot of training. How much time do you have to spend at home? What is your activity level? What size dog do you want? If you’re looking for a companion to snuggle, an older dog maybe the best choice. Depending on the breed, they may seem small at first, but end up being a larger dog than what you had wanted. When getting an older dog, you will know what you’re getting into in all aspects. Their likes, dislikes, temperament, and if they get into anything! When getting a kitten, they need a lot of time and attention. They love to play and run! They will need to learn not to scratch or bite. Kittens aren’t always best with dogs in the home as dogs play rough and may think cats are prey. Adult cats require less attention and supervision. They tend to do well with younger children as they are more patient. A senior looking for a pet should lean towards an older cat as well because they are less likely to get underfoot. These are just a few main points to consider before getting a pet! If you have any questions, please call RCHS at 802-483-6700.

A puzzling situation

Over the years, I’ve told my son at least a thousand times, “It’s a puzzle, figure it out.” Borne of necessity, I used the phrase to promote action in my child, given that his first response to difficulty, traditionally, was to either give up or make a half-hearted attempt. Because of his laissez-faire attitude, my…

Mating rituals of muskrats

Muskrat mating is so sensational that songs have been written about it. Fans of 1970s pop music might be familiar with a certain ballad, written by Willis Alan Ramsey and popularized by bands like America and Captain & Tennille, about two anthropomorphic muskrats falling in love. Though you probably won’t find breeding muskrats “nibblin’ on…
