While you’re making preparations for upcoming holidays, RCHS would like to offer some tips on how to make them as safe and enjoyable as possible for your pets. Thanksgiving is all about the food, but not all people food is safe for pets. Keep their noses away from the mixing bowl while you get the pumpkin pie ready. Raw eggs can lead to food poisoning and artificial sweeteners can be harmful too. Keep a watch over the leftover turkey, because dogs and cats have a hard time processing fatty foods like turkey skin. Small pieces of bone can also lead to gastrointestinal injury. All the coming and going of company can be stressful. If your furry friend seems anxious, try putting them in a quiet room away from the action with a favorite toy and plenty of fresh water. If you plan on traveling with your pet, make sure you are prepared. Your pet should have updated ID, as well as any supplies/medications needed for travel and for the time you plan on being away from home. No patch left unskied

The longest day of the year has officially come and gone, which means we are now on the slow, downhill slide toward winter. Given that the days are currently long and the temperatures are nearing their peak, my family has opted for the traditional summer beach vacation. This is nothing new since we’ve rented a…
Life in a shell: eastern box turtle

One species I was particularly drawn to was the eastern box turtle. These charismatic terrestrial turtles have high-domed shells festooned with colorful yellow or orange markings…
