March is a tomboy! Spring events in Killington

With tousled hair, a mischievous smile,

Mud on her shoes and a laugh in her voice.

Had enough snow yet? It seems we have snow every day, but that’s not the real problem.…temperatures hovering around 0 degrees are uncomfortable. However, it’s in our best interest to stay positive, and I have the best news. Daylight Saving Time starts on Sunday, March 9, which means an extra hour of daylight. If you still need a little more positivity in your life, try the following!

Gratitude Scavenger Hunt

Find something that makes you happy.

Find something to give to someone else that makes them happy.

Find one thing that you love to smell.

Find one thing you enjoy looking at.

Find something that is your favorite color.

Find something you are thankful for in nature.

Find something you can use to make a gift for someone.

Find something that is useful for you.

Many years ago, my father suggested that I buy some shares of Berkshire Hathaway. It must have been a stock split or something. Being a good girl, I listened to my father and bought 11 shares.

One for me, one for my husband (I have since divorced, so now I have two), one for my children, and one for my grandchildren. Many of you have heard of Warren Buffet, who manages Berkshire Hathaway, and know that it has done very well. Mr. Buffet, who is 94 years old, sends a letter each year to the shareholders, packed with advice and life lessons. This year, he talked about wisdom, pointing out that it’s not just about age but also about experience and the ability to adapt over time. Too often, society assumes that getting older means being dependent or losing relevance. Buffet’s long-term business partner, Charlie Munger, says to take a simple idea seriously. Focus and commitment yield extraordinary results. Aging is not about fading into the background. It’s about continuing to make smart decisions, staying engaged, and embracing the value of experience. Good advice!

A lot is going on in Killington this month. I ask that you put Tuesday, March 25, on your calendars. The Parks & Recreation Commission is having a presentation on the new plans for Killington’s Recreation Facilities. Our pool complex needs replacing, playing field updates, and a complete redo of the current town hall once the town offices move to their new location. The commission has been working on this plan for a long time, and there is something for everyone. It will cost money, so it makes sense for all of us to be informed.

Bored? Need something to do? Want to try something new? The Sherburne Memorial Library is the place to go! Have you ever tried needle punch? On Saturday, March 15, the library offers a short course in this craft. There is room for six adults, so call the library if interested. The laser cut workshop has been popular, and the next one will be on Saturday, March 22. The cost is $25 as this workshop is a fundraiser for the Fairy Tale Festival. Again, call the library to reserve a spot.

Monday movies start at 1 p.m., and there is always popcorn and comfortable seats.

Ongoing activities at the library include Mahjong, Tuesdays at 11 a.m. If you want to learn sign language, stop by on Fridays at 11:15 p.m. Bone Builders is every Monday and Thursday at 10 a.m., with weights provided. A group of volunteers meet on Tuesdays at 1 p.m. to work on various projects. Book Club meets on the last Wednesday of the month, with the current choice available at the library. Thoughts on Aging is a discussion group that meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 1 p.m. It is obvious that if you are interested in something or want to start a special interest group, Jane and the staff will do their best to accommodate you.

No, I didn’t forget St Patrick’s Day on March 17. How could I forget the special day featuring Irish soda bread, corned beef, and cabbage? It is a day with both religious and cultural meaning. St. Patrick was a 5th-Century missionary credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland. By the end of the 7th Century, he became a legendary figure and is considered a patron saint of Ireland. By his death on March 17, 461 A.D., he had established missionaries, churches, and schools. Many legends are attributed to him. It is said he drove the snakes out of Ireland and used the shamrock to explain the trinity. Ireland celebrates St. Patrick’s Day with religious services and feasts. Now, it’s more of a secular holiday celebrating all things Irish. So, wear your green, cook the traditional corned beef and cabbage, and have a green beer.

Remember to reach out to each other and always be grateful. Love who you can. Help where you can and give what you can.

Have a good month!

Gerrie
