Wine sampling and lingo lessons

By Becca Zidik

From premier wine tastings to exquisite hors d’oeuvres, there’s no better way to wind down after Wine Fest’s activities than relaxing at the Summit Pond. After a day of tasting some of the world’s most prestigious wine Becca Zidik_Headerfrom Austria, Italy, Spain, and Japan, pick a spot on the deck and have a glass of Silverado Vineyards’ Merlot, straight from the home country (we know you’re so over those tasting portions). With decadent flavors of rosemary and mint, compounded by spice, blackberry and a hint of cocoa to finish, this tasty little number is perfect for any California dreamer. Quite the relaxing getaway all within minutes of Killington Peak.

The acclaimed Napa Valley is home to Silverado Vineyards. With six distinctive vineyards in the heart of Napa, the property prides itself on flavor and character; the two aspects wine-lovers crave. Fruity notes within the vineyard’s acclaimed Chardonnay paint the imagination with a blur of color from pear, green apple, lemon zest, and honeysuckle. It’s reminiscent of the sunset you hopefully saw from the Gondola ride to the Peak that you may have taken! Don’t forget to use your new wine lingo from Wine Fest to have a great conversation with the Foundry’s sommelier, Will Spanos! It’s most likely the only time someone will understand what you’re talking about, so have at it.

Rockin’ the Region with Rivalry

Jacob Vahey, 14, and Lila Bucci, 15, who form the duo group Rivalry, are the youngest musicians I’ve interviewed to date. Coincidentally, Vahey’s Mom, Laura, attends my music bingo at the Public House Pub in Quechee. Rivalry played the Public House on St Patrick’s Day and Cinco De Mayo. They’ll return to play there on…

Fun outdoor activities for kids in the 50s

June 11, 2025
I find it refreshing to see the kids in my neighborhood outside now that warm weather has arrived. Some are on bikes. Others are “shooting hoops” or playing soccer in their backyards.  Riding bikes was probably the most popular outdoor activity for kids growing up on our street back in the ‘50s. We all began…

Editor’s note: Stephen Box is a Rutland-based general contractor, landlord, and advocate for citizen developers.  When it comes to increasing the number of available affordable housing units in Vermont, there are two strategies.  The first approach is to build more affordable housing, and this is the current favored strategy of Vermont’s non-profit housing developers with…
