Go vegan to reduce the risk of Covid-19

Dear Editor,

Good news: Leading medical experts in the U.K. believe that eating vegan foods rather than animal-based ones is the simplest, cheapest ways to reduce one’s risk of “becoming seriously ill with Covid-19.” In an open letter to the British government, the physicians explained that people who eat wholesome vegan foods are less likely to suffer from weight problems, diabetes, heart disease, and other conditions that can make one more susceptible to Covid-19.

While wholesome vegan foods won’t cure Covid-19 if you become infected, they can help strengthen your immune system, so you’re less vulnerable to the virus in the first place. According to Corinne Bush, science director for the American Nutrition Association and a member of the Personalized Nutrition and Covid-19 Task Force, one of the best ways to bolster our immune systems is to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.

In addition to wearing masks and social distancing, eating foods that contain flavonoids—nutrients found in citrus fruits, berries, apples, broccoli, legumes, and other plant foods—helps protect against pathogens, not to mention helps animals and protects the environment.
