Elect Battista for sherriff

Dear Editor,

In researching the candidates running for sheriff, facts came to light that are cause for concern.

Earlier, on Ryan Palmer’s website, he had posted a photo of himself holding an AR 15 semi-automatic, rapid-fire, assault rifle, an advocate of a weapon whose capability of mass destruction is a given, as used most recently to kill youngsters in the shooting at the elementary school in Texas.

A sheriff requires a level head, a mature person experienced in public relations, the ability to negotiate a situation whether with a town or a domestic violence de-escalation situation. Also was a photo of a child with a tactical carrier with AR 15 magazines that Palmer used in his campaign advertising. Using a child wearing a ballistic vest carrier is hardly appropriate and not one that any parent would consider doing. Common sense and wisdom comes with life experience. Our sheriff needs sound judgment, common sense, the ability to be professional and impartial while enforcing the law. Google for Palmer’s background, cause for concern considering his past.

Mike Chamberlain had originally decided to retire at age 74, then changed his mind.

The responsibilities and energy required to operate require a leader who is actively involved in running the operation of the department. Working remotely doesn’t allow the sheriff the ability to respond to situations in a timely manner. When I’ve tried to call the sheriff at the office, he’s not been there, however his daughter and wife were as they are on the payroll.

My vote is for Tom Battista for several reasons. A 20-year veteran of the department, Battista is a family man having lived in Springfield for many years, raising two children and sending them off to college.

High on his priority is establishing connections between domestic abuse programs and battered women’s groups. Tom Battista told me this is a high priority on his agenda.

Battista and I had a recent conversation that convinced me he is a grounded, respectful man, dedicated to serving the entire community with a level head, who has taken the “high road” in this election.

Maria Beauchain,
Ludlow
