We’re entering a new cycle

By Cal Garrison a.k.a. Mother of the Skye

This week’s horoscopes are coming out under the light of a Pisces Moon. In its new phase, with both the Sun and the Moon at the third degree of Pisces, we are looking at the beginning of a new cycle, when the year is at the end of the line; put simply, the new Moon in Pisces is the beginning of the end.

All of this got me thinking about cycles. When we talk about astrology we can go all over the map. At rock bottom, astrology comes down to a bunch of inter-connected planetary cycles and the ways in which they weave in and out of each other, through time.

The sun has a yearly cycle. Mercury moves a little faster, or a little slower, but it stays close to the sun and it too, takes about a year to move through the signs. The moon moves through the zodiac every 28 days. Venus takes about 18 months and Mars takes about two years to do the same thing. Jupiter has a 12 year cycle. Saturn takes between 28 and 30 years to circle the signs. Chiron has a 50-year pattern. Uranus has an 81-84 year pattern, Neptune’s cycle is 165 years. At about 250 years, Pluto’s cycle is a harmonic of what is known as the Grand Cycle, or the precession cycle.

Each planet holds a specific frequency and governs a certain aspect of human consciousness, development, and evolution. Their cycles are interconnected. The life cycle of a human being evolves through time and repetition. On numerous possible levels, at any point in time, an individual experiences lessons that relate directly to one, or more of these planetary cycles.

Using Saturn as a for instance: his cycle is about 30 years. In any given life, from birth to the 30th year, a series of lessons and events play out. These lessons and events are dependent on karmic agreements that the soul makes approximately nine months prior to conception. The first Saturn cycle begins at the moment the first breath is drawn and kicks off a 30-year ride on a carousel of experience that is unique to each of us.

One day after the 30th birthday Saturn gives us a ticket to take a second 30-year ride on the carousel. Because merry-go-rounds always retrace the same circuit, we go through the same series of experiences and events – but the second time around, those experiences are taking place on a higher octave, or harmonic, or on an adult level, as opposed to a childlike level of experience and awareness. If we were told about this in our youth, we would pay more attention to what happens along the way, and have an easier time making sense of things.

We don’t even own enough wisdom to handle our purpose until we turn 50, and we don’t connect the dots, until after the 60th year. If we are lucky enough to live that long, Saturn sells us our third ticket to ride on the merry-go-round. By that time, most of us begin to see that the same story, and the same scenery, and the same things keep happening over and over again.

As each interconnected cycle puts us through our paces,  we begin to notice that there is a reason for all of it, and that, for better or worse, we came all the way from the heart of creation to master whatever those lessons involve. Let me leave you with that and invite you to take what you can from this week’s ‘scopes.

I had already been working as an astrologer for 20 years when I got invited to write this weekly column. It started out as a radio broadcast on WEBK, in Killington, Vermont.
