Saturday, Dec. 28 at 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.—WOODSTOCK— The 10th annual Woodstock Vermont Film Series at Billings Farm and Museum will feature the documentary “Maiden” in HD projection and Surround Sound, with complimentary refreshments. Reservations are strongly recommended. The film is currently on the Oscar’s Best Documentary Feature shortlist for 2019.
“Maiden” shows how 24-year-old Tracy Edwards became the skipper of the first ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World race in 1989. At the time, the very idea of a competitive all-female sailboat crew was nearly inconceivable to the manly world of open-ocean yacht racing. Edwards’ inspirational dream was opposed on all sides, but her all-women crew shocked the sports world. As Director Alex Holmes describes it, “‘Maiden’ is a film about guts and the power of determination, about how when we are allowed to believe in ourselves great things are possible. It’s the story of a young girl who dared to dream and of a team that came together to challenge chauvinism and set an example to the world.”
