Dear Editor,
Vermont Veterans of Foreign Wars tried in the past to get Vt. Route 103 named for Desert Storm veterans and their families, but it was discovered that half of Route 103 was named for Calvin Coolidge back in the 1930s. Therefore, we have re-petitioned the state asking that Vt. Route 22A from Fair Haven in the south to Ferrisburg in the north be named “The Desert Storm Veterans Memorial Highway.”
All 10 town select boards along Route 22A have received a letter asking for their support. This year, March 3, marked 25 years since total victory in Desert Storm, giving freedom back to Kuwait. This was the largest callup of reserves and deployment of troops in Vermont since the end of Vietnam almost 50 years ago.
A petition of over 134 names of Vermonters 18 years and older from all over the state has been sent to the Board of Transportation and has been accepted. We ask that you please support this new effort to honor this group of deserving U.S. war veterans and their families.
The Board of Transportation will conduct a public hearing on this request on Aug. 17 in Shoreham, Vt. at 6 p.m. at Platt Memorial Library, 279 Main Street.
Please support this honorable tribute to Desert Storm veterans by sending a letter or card to: Vermont Board of Transportation, Attention: John Zicconi, 14 Baldwin Street, Montpelier, VT 05602 asking them to name Route 22A “The Desert Storm Veterans Memorial Highway.”
We thank you all in advance for supporting this project.
Steve Leach, U.S. Army Retired Vt. State VFW Committee Chairman to name VT Route 22A
