VSC Plan and Castleton University

Dear Editor,

The Castleton University Alumni Association Board of Directors, who represent over 18,000 living alumni members, oppose any name change from Castleton University to Vermont State University. The historical significance of Castleton’s name cannot be overstated. Castleton was founded in 1787 four years before Vermont became the 14th state in the Union. Castleton University, having educated students for 234 years, is the oldest institution of higher learning in Vermont, and the 14th oldest institution of higher learning in the  U.S.

The Castleton University Alumni Association Board of Directors understands there are proposals for an institutional overhaul to right the VSC financial ship and make high quality education more affordable and accessible for Vermonters.

A unified name change could significantly harm Castleton University’s brand and identity which have developed with great success in recent years. The ability to raise funds and attract out-of-state and international students would all be impacted affecting the financial stability of CU and the culture, economy and the future of the Rutland region and Vermont.

There are two opportunities for public comment and a dedicated page at vsc.edu/transformation. This includes a link for submitting written comment.

In addition, on Feb. 17 from 6-7:30 p.m., the Board of Trustees will hear verbal public comment. Members of the public may sign up at vsc.edu/PublicComment to speak.  The listening session will be livestreamed at vsc.edu/live. The Castleton University Alumni Association Board of Directors encourages alumni and friends of CU to voice their opinion.

Lawrence J. Courcelle, vice president CU Alumni Association Board of Directors
