CSJ weekly athletics roundup

College of St. Joseph had a tough week in sports. It began with the men’s soccer team going up against NHTI on Wednesday, Oct. 7. The Saints were unable to score and ended up losing the game 0-1. Over the weekend, the women’s volleyball team played against NHTI and Paul Smith’s. They lost both matches 0-3, but showed moments of great teamwork and fundamental skills throughout their sets.

The College of St. Joseph men’s soccer team lost in a defensive battle against NHTI, with a final score of 0-1. Both teams played conservatively for most of the game, and it was not until the 71st minute of play that NHTI’s Semir Sandzic was able to score on a free kick from 25 yards out.

The Saints came out aggressively to start the game, earning three early corner kicks, but were unable to execute them in order to put pressure on the goalkeeper. They were passing the ball well together and driving down the field, but they just could not find many good looks at the net. Much of the credit has to go to the Lynx’s well-disciplined defense for their ability to hound the Saints and get them out of their comfort zone.

CSJ volleyball played their first home game against NHTI. They played well for a few stretches throughout the match, but lacked some of the consistency needed to win sets. NHTI started rolling and gave the Saints little chance to make a comeback. The Saints fought hard, but ended with a 0-3 loss.

They played their second match against Paul Smith’s. CSJ was able to put some good pressure on Paul Smith’s, going deep into sets. The Saints just couldn’t seem to win the big points when they needed to most, and that forced them to play from behind the whole match.
