Guess Gertrude’s weight

It’s not too early to get in the Halloween spirit, and we’re not just talking about the bags of candy you’ve already eaten! The Rutland Recreation Dept. offers fun activities all month long at the Community Center, leading up the big night on Oct. 31.

Beginning Saturday, Oct. 17, take the whole family on Story Walk. Pages of “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” will lead you around the the exterior of the Community Center to… you guessed it… a GREAT pumpkin!

Once you get there, take a stab at guessing Gertrude’s weight. Don’t worry you won’t offend her, she is a pumpkin! Gertrude the Pumpkin was grown by farmers at Baird Farm, North Chittenden, and will be spending the month of October at the Rutland Rec Community Center (71 Clement Road). Guess her weight correctly and win a prize. Submit your guess at rutlandrec.com/pumpkin-submission-form.

Registration is now open for the first-ever Community Costume Stroll  on Oct. 31. Community partners will come prepared with spooky decorations and treat bags for families in the greater Rutland area. The event will take place outside in the back parking lot at the Rutland Recreation Community Center, in the event of inclement weather, the event will be moved into the Community Center Gymnasium. This is a free event, but pre-registration is required. There will be three sessions for the Trick or Treat Halloween and a maximum capacity of 100 participants for each session. Registration will be available through Sign-Up Genius starting Oct. 14 at 9 a.m. and will close when each session is filled or on Oct. 29 at noon.

All participants and community partners are asked to wear masks at all times during the event and maintain a minimum of 6 feet distance from others. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult (18+) at all times. Vendors will be wearing gloves and will be continuously replacing them throughout the day. All participants must leave the event once their session is over to give staff and community partners the opportunity to sanitize and get ready for the next session. Pre-registration is required for this event, they will not be accepting walk-ins.
