Workers find human skull in construction dig

By Ed Larson

Just before 10 a.m. on Monday, July 1, workers from Fabian Construction unearthed what they believed was a human skull at a construction site on Green Hills Lane, in Rutland City.

The work was being done partially on the roadway and on property owned by Central Vermont Motorcycles.

John Center, of Fabian Construction, immediately notified the Rutland City Police Department, then halted work at the site and cordoned it off.

Immediate speculation was that the skull was from an unmarked grave from the nearby Catholic Cemetery, which is just across Greens Hills Lane from Central Vermont Motorcycles.

Green Hills Lane is off West Street and is the feeder road for the Rutland City Sewage Treatment Plant as well as Casella Waste Management, The Rutland County Solid Waste District and several other businesses.

A Fabian employee stated the skull was small and appeared to be that of a child. A message was left with the Rutland Police Department wasn’t returned.
