Rutland City votes delayed after running out of ballots

Staff report

Rutland City’s Town Meeting results are delayed after the city ran out of ballots.

Rutland City Clerk Henry Heck ordered about 25% more ballots this year in anticipation of high turnout, likely driven by a large turnover of school board candidates. But, this is the first time in 14 years he ran out. The clerk’s staff photo copied about 250 ballots for voters and as a result, needs to count those by hand.

Early results for the Board of Aldermen race show incumbents Matt Whitcomb, Sharon Davis, Michael Talbott and newcomer Anna Tadio will be elected along with Chris Ettori, who previously served on the board, leaving out candidates Sam Gorruso and Kam Johnston.

Preliminary results show the top candidates for the School Board race after electronic counting are Marybeth Lennox-Levins, Courtney Collins, Sarah Atkins Doenges, Marisa Kiefaber and Karen Bossi.

An article to allow retail cannabis also passed handedly in the electronic tally, with 61% of the voters voting yes and 39% voting no.

The city budget and school budget also passed.
