Program helps schools fight back against cancer

Wednesday, June 17 — POULTNEY — On Wednesday, June 17, Poultney Elementary School is participating in the Relay Field Day™program created by the American Cancer Society. The flexible program combines cancer education, physical activity, and fundraising through turnkey tools and resources for teachers and administrators. It’s all part of the Society’s signature activity, the “Relay For Life” movement.

The program’s educational components emphasize ways students and their families can prevent cancer by adopting healthy lifestyles. Topics covered include physical activity, nutrition, sun safety, and tobacco prevention. A variety of supporting materials and activities are provided to participating educators. The fundraising component of the program aims to teach students about community service and team building.

“The Relay recess program is an excellent way for teachers, students, and parents to come together as a team to fight back against cancer,” says Kristen Caliguri, principal.
