Police rule Rutland death a homicide

RUTLAND — On Monday, Nov. 23, the Vermont State Police identified Jonathon Houghton, 35, of Holyoke, Massachusetts, as the victim of homicide. Following further investigation and an autopsy.

The death was reported early Sunday morning, Nov. 22, at the Quality Inn in Rutland. Police were called at about 3:40 a.m. Sunday to investigate a report of a disturbance in a room in the hotel, located at 253 South Main St. Responding officers located a deceased adult male in the hotel room. Preliminary investigation indicated the death is suspicious.

The autopsy, Monday, was performed at the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington. It determined that Houghton’s cause of death was a gunshot wound to the torso, and the manner of death is homicide.

“Police believe this was an isolated incident, and there is no current threat to the general public,” according to a state police news release Monday.

The joint investigation by VSP and the Rutland City Police Dept. into this homicide is active and ongoing. Investigators ask that anyone with information to call 802-773-9101. Anonymous tips can be submitted at vsp.vermont.gov/tipsubmit.
