National Science Foundation SBIR/STTR program overview: A unique opportunity for Vermont businesses engaged in R&D

Wednesday, May 26 at 9 a.m.— VIRTUAL — The Vermont Procurement Technical Assistance Center (VT PTAC) is pleased to present this SBIR/STTR webinar on Wednesday, May 26 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. for Vermont businesses involved in Research and Development (R&D). Technology companies eligible for non-dilutive federal funding through the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs should attend this free event.

Vermont businesses will learn if their R&D project qualifies for funding through the NSF’s SBIR and STTR programs in this 90-minute webinar. NSF awards nearly $190 million annually to startups and small businesses through the SBIR/STTR programs. “Between 2009 and 2018, Vermont submitted only 62 applications. Even though there was an increase in the last FY, there is still plenty of room for growth”, said VT PTAC Director Joanne Spaulding. Data provided by NSF shows that in FY20, Vermont received $17,360,000 in awards.

Nationally known speaker Jerry Hollister, senior principal consultant at BBC Entrepreneurial Training & Consulting (BBCetc) will cover the basics of the NSF programs including goals and eligibility, projects the NSF funds and its funding rates, application components and proposal scoring. Attendees will learn:

  • How to communicate with the program manager
  • Best practices for preparing and submitting a project pitch
  • How to develop your preliminary project plan and budget
  • Advice on pitfalls to avoid
