Mendon Historical Society invites public on history hike

Saturday, May 9 at 12:30 p.m. — MENDON — The Mendon Historical Society will hold a hike on Saturday, May 9 at 12:30 p.m. led by Justin Lindholm. The hike will cover the northeast section of the town, following the Old Turnpike Road, along the original route of the Rutland to Stockbridge Turnpike opened in 1808 and past “The Elbow.”  This road continued and became the primary route to Montpelier in the 19th century.

Points of interest will be the site of the old Shedd Tavern, also known as the Coffeehouse, foundations of farmhouses, the northeast survey point of the town of Mendon, and the Long Trail crossing. The majority of the terrain is gentle and suitable for all ages and abilities, but some of the side trails are of moderate difficulty.

Meet at the Mendon Town Office at 12:30 p.m. to drive in a caravan to the starting point. Bring water, snacks, and wear sturdy shoes. Rain date is Sunday, May 10 at 12:30 p.m.
