A longtime employee of Mountain Sports Inn in Killington was found dead in his onsite apartment unit on Friday, Feb. 26.
Killington Police Chief Whit Montgomery said Peter S. MacDonald, 55, was found unresponsive by an employee of the inn on Friday morning. Police responded around 11 a.m. and he was pronounced dead.
It’s unclear what caused MacDonald’s death. The Vermont State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation responds to untimely deaths that are unwitnessed.
Vermont State Police Trooper Kipp Colburn, who is investigating the case, said there was no indication of foul play. Colburn said he was investigating if MacDonald had Covid-19, as local rumors suggested, but declined to say more.
“I’m not confident in the level of information I can disclose,” Colburn said.
Mountain Sports Inn owner Cameron Sardelli declined to say if MacDonald was sick. He said MacDonald was the general manager and had worked at the inn for about 15 years. He lived in the apartment at the inn by himself.
“We’re the ones that found him,” Sardelli said. “We were checking in on him.”
MacDonald was hired by Sardelli’s father and continued to work for the inn when Sardelli took ownership.
“He was a very close friend of ours,” Sardelli said. “You don’t work with someone for that long without having a really close relationship.”
Arrangements are being made by Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland.
