The start of school is around the corner

Area teachers and students are looking forward to the beginning of the academic year.  In Castleton, fall registration is at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, for kindergarteners through eighth grade, at Castleton Elementary. On Friday, Aug. 22, parents and students can meet principal Kathleen Kilbourne, in a get-together from 6 to 8 p.m. School supporters are gathering at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, to clean up the kids’ castle play area at Castleton Elementary. Classes begin Wednesday, Aug. 27.

At Benson Village School, teachers have been shuffled around a bit. Mrs. Miles is teaching kindergarten and first grade, while Mrs. Fletcher and Mrs. Gunn will teach grades 2 and 3. Mrs. Nichols will teach grades 4 and 5 along with Mrs. Kristen Whitman, who is new to Benson this year. Also new this year is Ms. Jessica Perkins, who will teach art.

Mrs. Corey returns to substitute for Mrs. Hale, on maternity leave for the first six weeks of the Benson school year, before staying through the first part of the year as a special educator.

Back to School Night at Benson is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 26, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

With the move to Rutland South Supervisory Union, Tinmouth Elementary School employees now have new emails. They follow the pattern of first initial followed by last name and @rssu.org. For example, Daryl Houk is dhouk@rssu.org. The school is also working on a new website through the district homepage, rssu.org.

Buyers for Bul building?

CASTLETON—Castleton’s select board recently voted to put the former town office building at 556 Main Street up for auction. Town manager Charles Jacien has already noticed some interest in purchasing the historic structure, although Jacien believes more than $1 million is necessary to renovate the building for workplace use.

Town officials believe the edifice, nearly 200 years old, is one of the oldest public structures in the state. That’s both good and bad. The building has mold, a drawback that any new owner would have to overcome in order to use the building for commercial purposes. Bidding for the building is said to begin at $50,000 with a $10,000 deposit to obtain a bidding ticket.
