Killington woman among three Vermont drivers in I-89 crash, car fire

On Wednesday, April 21, at approximately 8:27 p.m., troopers from the Williston Barracks were notified of a single-vehicle crash on I-89 south in the town of Richmond. While responding, troopers were notified that two more vehicles had collided into the original crash. They arrived on scene to find the third vehicle fully engulfed in flames.

All operators and occupants were evaluated on scene.

The interstate was briefly shut down while Richmond Fire extinguished the vehicle fire.

The investigation revealed that Courtney Walton, 29, from Killington, was traveling south on I-89 when she lost control of her 1998 Toyota Forerunner due to icy road conditions.

According to police, the Forerunner collided with the guardrails and came to rest in the travel lane of the interstate. Police listed it as “totalled.”

The second vehicle, a 2020 Subaru Outback driven by Kayla Steen, 32, of Waterbury, struck the Forerunner but did not sustain significant damage, according to reports. Steen was able to drive her Outback off the interstate. It was listed as having only minor damage.

A third vehicle, a 2020 Ford Ranger driven by Jesse Sawyer, 25, from Vergennes, then also struck the Forerunner. It caught on fire and was “fully engulfed” by the time responders arrived on the scene.  It was deemed “totalled,” by police.

Neither impairment nor distracted driving were contributing factors. All drivers were wearing their seatbelts and no injuries resulted from this crash.
