Feb. surprise: state tax receipts up by $16.34 million

By Anne Galloway, VTDigger.org

State revenues were up by a whopping $16.34 million in February, despite sagging ski resort attendance due to unseasonably warm weather.

Justin Johnson, the secretary of the Agency of Administration, said personal income was higher last month because of lower than anticipated income tax refunds “due to concerns over taxpayer fraud.” Personal income refunds were $23.6 million lower than expected.

Tourism-related tax receipts were slightly above estimated levels; cumulative General Fund revenues are up $15.04 million for the year; and the Education Fund is up $3.27 million above estimates because of the Powerball jackpot in January.
