Church feeds kids through summer months

KILLINGTON — The Sherburne United Church of Christ (SUCC) at the Little White Church has been providing summer lunches to children in Killington and the surrounding communities.  These children participate in the free or reduced cost school lunches during the school year and miss out on an opportunity for a healthy meal during the summer months. The SUCC developed the program working with the leadership at the Killington Elementary School to identify the families who most need the program.

Each week, five families pick up groceries at the Little White Church that enable them to feed their kids a full healthy lunch each day for the week. A typical package includes luncheon meat, bread, four types of fruit, snacks and drinks. Many families pick up additional items from the food shelf while at the church. The food shelf provides all types of non-perishable foods, paper goods, toiletries, and even pet food.

The participating families are very appreciative for the help and stress how hard the summer months are when workers may be earning less than during the winter months.

This program is sponsored by SUCC donations as well as a small grant from the Department of Mission of the Vermont Conference of the United Church of Christ.  If you would like to donate to support the program or are a family in need who would like to participate, please contact the SUCC Pastor, Beverly Anderson, at 422-3484.
