Auto tour explores Revolutionary military road

Saturday & Sunday, Aug. 20-21—HUBBARDTON—The Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site is hosting two events exploring the 1776-77 Mount Independence-Hubbardton military road, the weekend of Aug. 20-21.
On Saturday, Aug. 20, at 9:30 p.m., an orientation and guided auto tour will take place along the section of the military road from Hubbardton to Center Rutland, guided by Jim Rowe, president of the Crown Point Road Association. You will be driving your own vehicle. Meet at the visitor center for orientation. The tour is $3 for adults and free for children under 15, and includes admission to the Battlefield. This is the fifth annual tour exploring sections of the road.
On Sunday, Aug. 21, at 2 p.m., the Battlefield’s Third Sunday program will commemorate the 240th anniversary of the military road.
The road was built to connect the Revolutionary War fortification being constructed at Mount Independence on Lake Champlain to Hubbardton, Rutland, and Fort No. 4 in New Hampshire. On the night of July 5-6, 1777, as the British invaded the lake, American forces withdrew from Mount Independence along the road, engaging the British at the Battle of Hubbardton on July 7, in the only Revolutionary War battle fought in Vermont..
Special guests, including longtime Revolutionary War reenactor Bob Franzoni, will talk with visitors about the use of the military road by soldiers and how it was used to transport supplies to Mount Independence to prepare for the arrival of the British army. Long-time reenactor Wight Manning will show you his artillery piece.
This program is $3 for adults and free for children under 15, and includes admission to the Site.
The Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site is located at 5696 Monument Hill Road, Hubbardton. Look for signs.
