It was a lopsided week for College of St. Joseph athletics, with the baseball team continuing their dominance and going a perfect 6-0, and the softball team taking a couple steps back going 0-5. Fighting Saints baseball has improved their overall record to 47-11 on the season and are currently riding a 13-game winning streak. They are the No.1 seed going into the USCAA Small College World Series, which CSJ will be hosting at East Field in Glens Fall, N.Y. on May 8-12. Lady Saints softball struggled this week and saw their overall record drop to 21-14, losing their last five games in-a-row. The team is still No.5 in the USCAA Coaches Poll and has a great shot of earning a bid to the Softball Small College World Series at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio May 15-19. Here is a closer look at last week’s games.
Apr. 25
Lady Saints softball started the week going up against NCAA D-III opponent Middlebury College, in a doubleheader. CSJ came ready and played tough, but were unable to get themselves over the top, losing 12-4 and 9-8 respectively. Krysta Konderwich had three hits and two RBI’s in the first game, but Middlebury had 15 hits as a team to CSJ’s eight. Game two was much closer, but CSJ gave up three runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to lose the game by just one run.
Apr. 27
Fighting Saints baseball got their week started on the right foot, taking care of business and defeating NHTI in both games of a doubleheader, 17-3 and 8-2, respectively. Kevin Rodriguez, Tyler Kunzmann, and Chris Doyle each hit big-time home runs in game one and as a team the Saints accumulated a whopping 19 hits. Jovan Henriquez pitched a two-hitter for CSJ in game two and gave up zero earned runs for the win.
Softball also played NHTI in a doubleheader on Wednesday, but could not get the job done, losing both games, 7-1 and 4-3, respectively. CSJ was only able to get three hits in each game and that turned out to be the main reason why they could not pull off a victory.
Apr. 28
Baseball and softball played NHTI one more game each on Thursday. The baseball team was able to stay hot and beat the Lynx convincingly, 14-1. The softball team was not as fortunate, losing in a close battle 5-4.
Apr. 30
Fighting Saints baseball beat Fisher College 11-1 on Saturday, in big thanks to Alan Madsen, who pitched a one-hitter and gave up no runs through seven innings of work.
May 1
CSJ baseball finished out the week with a doubleheader match-up against the Fisher Falcons. The games were tighter than usua,l but each resulted in victories for the Saints. 6-4 was the final score for both games, in which CSJ made all the big plays when they needed to down the stretch.
