Massive marble sculpture installed at Vermont Farmers Food Center

By Royal Barnard
RUTLAND —  Robert Black, president of the board of trustees of the Carving Studio and Sculpture Center, introduced sculptor Nora Valdez and her creation “Borne,” April 30, to participants gathered for an event to celebrate the temporary installation of this monumental marble sculpture at the Vermont Farmers Food Center at 251 West Street in Rutland.
“Borne” was created by Valdez, a native of Argentina, during the CSSC 2010 Marble Sculpture Symposium, sponsored in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
“Farmers and artists cultivate community through hard work and creativity,” said CSSC Executive Director Carol Driscoll, “so it is natural to partner with the Vermont Farmers Food Center.”
Driscoll made a point to announce that CSSC will offer special classes this year for women wishing to learn to create with stone.
“You can do it” she said. “Just look at this massive beautiful creation by Nora. Yes, she did have some help, but that’s how we function in the art world.”
