Pedestrian hit on Sherburne Pass

KILLINGTON — On Friday, Aug. 8, at approximately 4:27 p.m., members of the Vermont State Police, Killington Fire & Rescue, and Regional Ambulance Service, responded to a one vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on Route 4 in the town of Killington.

Loren D. Roth, age 71 from Rutland Town, was identified as the operator of the grey 2012 Buick Regal. Roth was traveling east on Route 4, at approximately 52 mph when he approached the hillcrest of the Sherburne Pass near the Inn at Long Trail. He saw the pedestrian crossing the road and attempted to stop his vehicle. Roth was able to slow his vehicle down, but was not able to avoid the pedestrian and struck her near the north shoulder of the roadway.

The pedestrian, later identified as Shirley K. Royce, age 51 of Reading, Vt., was treated at the scene and transported to Rutland Regional Medical Center for further evaluation. Analysis at the scene provided information that Royce was struck in the right leg and that she may have possible fractures. She suffered an abrasion on her inside left knee, police reported.
