WEST PAWLET—Following winter vacation, Mettawee Community School’s fourth, fifth, and sixth graders participated in classroom-level rounds of the National Geographic Geography Bee.

“Students were prepared and excited for the competition which took place in the classrooms the week of Jan. 11,” said Mark Rampone, a MCS third grade teacher and school Geo Bee organizer.

The school announced the results of its competition in a news release Feb. 8, congratulating the eight classroom-level finalists. Sixth-grade finalists were Lily Cole and Kassidy Brooks. Fifth grade finalists were Jeffrey Panoushek, Brett Rosenbauer, and Ava Witt. Fourth grade finalists were Tucker Haynes, Aliza O’Rourke, and Sam Cole.

These finalists moved on to the school championship level held at during Mettawee’s All-School Meeting on Jan. 27. The Mettawee Community School champion was Brett Rosenbauer, with Tucker Haynes in second place and Lily Cole in third.

MCS Principal Brooke DeBonis said, “I am proud of all the students who were on stage answering the challenging geography questions in front of the whole school.”

Rampone reflected on this year’s competition: “Mettawee had another successful Geo Bee this year, with nearly 70 students competing in either the classroom rounds or finals. The competition was friendly and fun. It was hard just to have one winner with such eager and enthusiastic fourth, fifth, and sixth graders, but the emphasis was on having fun and learning about the world.”
