Accident sends two to hospitals

On Nov. 21 at 12:40 a.m., Vermont State Police in Royalton received a call about a single vehicle accident on Route 12A in Braintree. The operator, Spencer Brown, was taken to Gifford Medical Center for minor injuries.

One of Brown’s passengers, Joseph Wheatley, age 22, was airlifted by DHART (helicopter) to Dartmouth with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The car, a 1999 Audi, is considered totaled.

Based on initial investigation Brown was traveling south on Route 12A when he traveled off the west side of the road and struck several trees before traveling back into the roadway. The vehicle came to rest facing south in the northbound lane of Route 12A.

Alcohol and speed were considered factors initially. and based on further investigation, Spencer Brown was charged with DUI and Gross Negligent Operation. Brown provided a preliminary breath test (PBT) of .252 BAC. Brown is to appear at Orange County Court on Dec. 9 at 8 a.m.

State Police were assisted by Randolph Police Department, Randolph Village Fire Department, White River Valley Ambulance and DHART.
