Human remains found by hunter

Submitted

Philip Jackman

On Oct. 2, the Vermont State Police received a report that a hunter had located human remains in a wooded area off Beard Road in the town of Orange, while tracking his hunting dogs.

Troopers and detectives with the VSP responded to the scene and collected the remains and other items of interest. The remains were sent to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, where they were viewed and are scheduled to undergo further analysis to assist in the identification of the victim. At this time, there is no evidence to suggest the death is a result of foul play.

Police suspect that the body might be fugitive Philip Jackman.

In the fall of 2004, fugitive Philip Jackman, age 21, wanted on a state warrant for sex offenses, was on the run. Jackman’s vehicle was found abandoned on Beard Road and information was received that Jackman was suicidal and evading his capture. All efforts to locate Jackman were unsuccessful. The U.S. Marshals Service adopted the case and have been searching for Jackman ever since. Although there is speculation that the remains recovered on are those of Philip Jackman, Jackman’s status as a Vermont fugitive remains in effect until investigation can confirm otherwise.
