SUDBURY — On Oct. 17 at approximately 9:54 p.m., members of the Vermont State Police Rutland Barracks responded to a single vehicle crash on Route 30 at the intersection of Route 73 in the town of Sudbury. Preliminary investigation revealed that Jakob P. Mulcahy, age 20 of Forest Dale, was operating a 2006 Honda Civic south-bound on Route 30 in the area of Route 73 when he lost control of the vehicle. The car left the western side of the roadway and overturned several times before coming to rest in a field. Mulcahy was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported to the Rutland Regional Medical Center but died from his injuries, police reported.
Additionally, there were two passengers in the car: Jacob D. Mitchell, age 20 of Ludlow, and Sean Armstrong, age 20 also of Ludlow. It appears that Mitchell was seat belted but was also ejected from the vehicle while Armstrong remained seat belted inside the vehicle, police investigation revealed. Mitchell and Armstrong sustained non-life threatening injuries. They were transported to the Rutland Regional Medical Center for treatment. Mitchell was thought to have possibly fractured his neck, lower back and sternum, and had visible lacerations to right arm. Armstrong had minor cuts/lacerations to right hand and arm.
The vehicle’s speed appears to be a contributing factor in this crash.
The Brandon Area Rescue Squad, Whiting Fire & EMS and Regional Ambulance Service also assisted with this incident. The Vermont State Police crash reconstruction team responded to the scene to conduct an investigation as to the cause of the crash.
