Hannaford Supermarkets donates $10,000 to support drug and alcohol prevention program in Rutland

RUTLAND—On Thursday, Oct. 15 Hannaford Supermarkets will present a $10,000 donation to support drug and alcohol prevention program at the Boys & Girls Club of Rutland County, located at 71 Merchants Row in downtown Rutland. The donation will support expansion of its Smart Directions drug and alcohol prevention program, which is designed to teach local youth the dangers of opiate and heroin use. The donation will allow the Boys & Girls Club of Rutland County to reach more local youth during the 2015-16 school year.

Larry Bayle, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Rutland County, along with local youth participating in the Smart Directions program, will accept the donation from Brian Fabre, regional community relations specialist for Hannaford Supermarkets.

The Smart Directions drug and alcohol prevention program is designed to teach youth ages 6 to 14 the dangers of opiate and heroin use through role play, the practice of resistance, decision-making and refusal skills, and the analysis of media and peer influence.

The program will serve approximately 80 local youth during the 2015-16 school year and is part of the Project VISION program, a coalition of local government, organizations, businesses and individuals working to build a brighter future for Rutland through a three-pronged strategy approach of prevention, treatment and enforcement.
