Join VINS for a Halloween family celebration; includes Hoots & Howls

Saturday, Oct. 24 at 10:15 a.m. — QUECHEE — The Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) invites children and adults alike to Hoots & Howls, a seasonal fall event on Saturday, Oct. 24 at the VINS Nature Center in Quechee. Hoots and Howls returns this year with another “spook-tacular,” fun-filled, family day and evening of exciting adventures, featuring Northern Stage’s interpretation of Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven” at 3 p.m. as well as a singing and storytelling performance, “Tales of Scales, Feathers and Claws,” by Michael Caduto at 1 p.m. A host of other activities will add spice to this year’s festivities, which run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The day will start off with an inspiring Bird-on-Glove Encounter at 10:15 a.m., followed by a fascinating owl program and pellet dissection at 11 a.m. Additional activities will include a behind-the-scenes tour, Cold-Blooded Critters, Snake Encounters and Crafts, and Skulls and Bones. Peeps and Squeaks, an event tailored specifically for young children, will take place at 4:30 p.m. with Halloween-themed activities and stories as well as a live animal encounter. And, not to be missed, VINS’ 11th Annual Hoots & Howls event will include guided tours, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., for visitors of all ages. Individual groups will be guided through the VINS Nature Center along trails lit by jack-o-lanterns with frequent stops to enjoy storytelling, live animals, skits, and more! This year, a segment of the guided tours will feature a lively performance by Dancers’ Corner. Wrap up the evening with mouth-watering tricky treats and a chance to encounter a raptor up close. Thrill us with your creativity and imagination as you dare to dress your best.

Admission is free for VINS members and for children, 3 and under. Admission for non-members for the day is $13.50 for adults; $12.50 for seniors, 62 and over; and $11.50 for youth, ages 4 to 17. Admission for the evening, beginning at 5:30 p.m., is $11.50 for adults and $9.50 for youth. Call 802-359-5000, ext. 201 to reserve a spot for a Hoots & Howls Tour. Reservations are encouraged.
