It was a big week in sports for College of St. Joseph, led by the baseball team who won the YSCC fall championship on Oct. 3 after defeating Southern Maine CC. Softball got a big win in its semifinal game against Southern Maine, but were unable to get the victory against NHTI in the championship. CSJ volleyball got their first win of the season, going the full five sets against Great Bay and coming away with a hard fought victory. Here is a look at the week.
Sept. 30
The Saints’ week started on a strong note, with the newly-formed volleyball team getting its first win of the season. They played a closely contested match against Great Bay CC, where they were able to dig in deep and win three sets. They played great as a team, and showed signs of a bright future to come.
Oct. 2
Men’s soccer faced off against conference foe Vermont Tech, and were able to pull off a 2-1 victory. The Saints were led by Helder Andrade and Christopher Turco. This gives CSJ the season sweep against VTC.
The baseball team faced a tough non-conference opponent in College of Saint Rose. The game ended up being a pitching and defensive battle between the two teams. The Saints played great on that end, but were unable to get the bats going, losing the game 0-2.
Oct. 3
Saints’ baseball made up for their tough loss on Friday by winning the YSCC fall championship against conference-rival SMCC. They won their semifinal game 7-0 against NHTI before advancing onto a more tightly contested championship game against SMCC and winning 4-1. Tyler Kunzmann was named tournament MVP, and Chris Doyle was awarded Outstanding Offensive Player.
The softball team played outstanding in its semifinal game against Southern Maine, winning 9-1 and dominating all five innings of play. They advanced on to play conference rival NHTI in the championship game and struggled to put hits together. The Lady Saints put a great effort forth, but were unable to pull off the championship victory. Emily Johnson earned Outstanding Defensive Player.
Finally, the men’s soccer team had a home match against Maine – Presque Isle, which ended in a 2-2 tie. Due to injuries, the Saints were short staffed and the reserves filled in nicely. Kyle Milligan played great as goalkeeper, making game saving plays down the stretch to keep the game tied.
