LUDLOW — The Black River Academy Museum and the Ludlow middle and high school classes last year developed this program and recently it was presented to sixth grade students from Mt. Holly. The program is a day-long immersion experience that combines the fields of social science, language and arts and utilizes the museum’s research facilities and collection of artifacts.
The students formed groups and participated in birch bark crafts, learned Finnish dancing, singing and cooking. Lunch was a traditional Finnish pancake that they had prepared and the very traditional coffee hour included Finn Crisp with Finlandia cheese, salted herring and pullaa, a braided cardamom coffee bread.
The team, which presents the program it developed, is comprised of Georgia Brehm, director of the museum; Linda Tucker, assistant director; Sue Pollender, president of the board of directors and former Ludlow teacher; Alice Suojanen, past president of the Finnish-American Society; and Joan Willett, former secondary education teacher.
This program is available to any student group, including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Brownies, 4-H members, church youth groups and many others.
