Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports seeks summer volunteers

Instructor training begins in June for water sports, cycling, sailing and more

KILLINGTON—Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports, the largest year-round disabled sports nonprofit organization in Vermont to offer daily, year-round sports and recreation for people with disabilities, is looking for energetic summer volunteers who have a dedicated passion for sports and who want to share that passion with others.

Summer volunteers will help teach and lead the organization’s popular summer programs that “enable people with disabilities to get outside and enjoy all that Vermont has to offer,” said Tom Alcorn, senior program coordinator for the organization. Activities include sailing, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, cycling, beeper baseball, horseback riding, EcoAble Adventures, wellness programs, and more.

There will be two training sessions: June 6 at the Chittenden Dam in Chittenden, and June 13 at the organization’s northern summer location on the waterfront in Burlington at the Lake Champlain Sailing Center. Training will cover cycling, paddling and other summer activities.

Summer volunteers should have experience in cycling, rock climbing or paddling, depending on the activity for which they want to volunteer. Volunteers are asked to volunteer five days throughout the year (in addition to the training days) and to volunteer for at least one of Vermont Adaptive’s fundraising events.

“Volunteering is a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community by helping individuals with disabilities rediscover their abilities and passion for sports,” said Alcorn. “We couldn’t do what we do without the help from our dedicated volunteers–so come join the team, and be ready to have some fun with some awesome people!”
