Tuesday, Dec. 6 — CASTLETON —The 20th annual 2022 Gift-of-Life Marathon will honor longtime volunteer David Carini, and thanks to three local businesses, donors will receive Stefanie Schaffer’s new book as a gift for donating.
The drive will be held Dec. 6 from noon to 5 p.m. at Castleton University; Dec. 14 and 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Rutland Elks Lodge, and Dec. 16 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Rutland Recreation Community Center.
Appointments are strongly encouraged and can be made by calling 800-RED-CROSS or visiting redcrossblood.org. Please make your appointment today.
There is also a need for volunteers on Dec. 16. If you would like to volunteer, email stevecostelloswildlife@gmail.com and let Steve Costello know if you would like to help from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., 2 p.m. – 6 p.m. or 10 a.m. -6 p.m. Folks working at 10 a.m. will be asked to arrive at least 15 minutes early.
Thanks to funding from Diamonds and More, Green Mountain Power, and MKF Properties, presenting donors will receive a free copy of “Without Any Warning: Casualties of a Caribbean Vacation.” The book tells the inspiring story of GOLM Ambassador Stefanie Schaffer, who was critically injured in a boat explosion in 2018, and received voluminous amounts of blood during her recovery.
This year’s GOLM is dedicated to David Carini, who died unexpectedly earlier this year, and was among the most prolific Red Cross volunteers in Vermont, helping plan and run dozens of blood drives. Carini was a fixture at Rutland County drives, including the GOLM, and volunteered in disaster recovery efforts of the Red Cross, volunteering more than 13,000 hours over the years.
