RHS expands technology

RUTLAND—Rutland High School’s library is undergoing a transformation with the addition of a second level designed for computer labs and classroom and study space. Tools from the folks at Google are a major component of the renewed learning environment, enabling students to work independently, while teachers may oversee and guide their work. The new tools also aid collaboration among students, including peer editing. The communication protocol is open to teachers and students from any location that has an Internet connection, and the system not only can merge the work of numerous students but can also track the input to record which students are participating and to what degree. RHS is also receiving 1,500 new Chromebooks.

Summer construction season ramps up

CLARENDON—The Rutland-Southern Vermont Regional Airport in Clarendon is entering the final phase of runway expansion ahead of schedule. However, getting the work finished means effectively shortening the runway and shutting it down at night as construction proceeds. Doing so will not affect Cape Air’s Boston connection or UPS and Federal Express flights. The finished project features a larger buffer zone at the end of the runway to conform with Federal Aviation administration regulations.

RUTLAND TOWN–Plans to build a BJ’s Wholesale Club on Route 7 South recently came a step closer to realization with the issuance of a ruling that renewed plans for development were in accordance with the new Rule 9L. Yet the project still must pass an amended land-use permit and a recess order appeal from Diamond Run Mall’s owners. Developer Gene Beaudoin expects the amended Act 250 application will take from three to six months.

Familiar faces take new positions:
Rutland Food Co-Op

RUTLAND—A new face is coming on board while others switch departments, and still others are leaving to go on to other things. The new staffer is Barbara Richardson, dividing her time between cashier, marketing and acting as outreach coordinator. Katlin Dow returns to manage the bulk department and dress the front window. Dan Kelly steps into the coffee buyer position. Kris Harmelink, who started at the Co-Op in October, is now produce department manager.

Congratulations

to the owners of a new shop opening in Diamond Run Mall May 2. AristoBrat plans to sell children’s clothing, baby products, toys, books, and video and board games.
