Castleton to host 2nd annual Right to Play Kickball Classic.
CASTLETON, Vt. – Castleton members are gearing up for a day of sports, fundraising, and friendly competition as they prepare for the 2nd annual Kickball Classic in support of the Right to Play Foundation on Sunday, April 26.
The Right to Play Foundation is a global organization that uses the transformative power of play to educate and empower children facing adversity. Through sports and games, Right to Play helps children build essential life skills and better futures, while driving social change in their communities with lasting impact.
Each year, Right to Play reaches one million children in regular weekly activities in more than 20 countries around the world.
“After last year’s event there was a buzz around campus and even students who didn’t play were talking about putting a team together for the following year, in hopes that the event would be the same because of how much fun they heard it was,” said Thomas Shelley, Co-President of Right to Play at Castleton.
The Right to Play group at Castleton is made up of student-athletes eager to give back to sports. Realizing that their place in this world has been greatly influenced by sports, many see the event as a chance to provide an opportunity for children in less-privileged countries with their own “Right to Play.”
Last year’s kickball tournament raised, $9,180, but Shelley, who took over Right to Play this year along with student Ryan Frost, raised the bar with a goal of raising $10,000 through the event.
“We felt that kickball is an activity that everyone can participate in regardless of age or physical ability. So by keeping it the same we hope to add students, staff and faculty from different backgrounds and departments,” said Shelley.
Kick-off will begin at 9 a.m. on the Castleton Alumni Field (South of Spartan Stadium).
This year’s tournament teams are made up of a combination of students, faculty, staff and alumni, each prepared to kick for the cause. Past years Right to Play events at Castleton have included a World Record dodge ball tournament that raised $7,000, and a barefoot soccer game.
