PROCTOR — As the residents of Proctor are aware, the ground water from the Field Street Well is very hard compared to the surface water the town had been receiving from the Chittenden Filter Plant. The Selectboard looked into the possibility of undertaking a municipal water softening project and they found that: 1. No Vermont municipality is providing system-wide water softening. 2. The Field Street Well site is not large enough to accommodate a softening facility. 3. There are not sufficient balance in the current operating or reserve funds to finance the project, therefore a bond vote would be required. 4. It would most likely take a least couple years to complete the project.
Based on these findings the Selectboard concluded that a townwide water softening project is not a viable option. To assist customers in determining how to proceed, the Selectboard scheduled an informational meeting for 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 8 at the Proctor Free Library Community Room. They have invited representatives from the VT Drinking Water Division and suppliers of water softening equipment to attend and answer questions.
