Killington does it again: The Bear Mountain Mogul Challenge wins for best spring party

Staff report

The annual Bear Mountain Mogul Challenge last Saturday, April 2, did not disappoint as amateur bumpers took to the slopes of Outer Limits at Killington Resort to battle for a place in the finals. The top 32 men and 16 women then competed in a head-to-head competition for the Mogul Challenge cup.

Myles Frendel who won the final run in the men’s division; Ryan Brewster took second place. For the women’s division, Christina Obrien took first place followed by Sammie Sofer.

The men and women bumpers were awarded a maximum of five points in the following categories:

  • Turns and Line (60%): Quality and variety of well-executed turns while staying as close as possible to the fall line.
  • Air (20%): Quality of upright aerial maneuvers executed spontaneously in the fall line. Inverts are strictly prohibited.
  • Speed (20%): Speed score is based on a male and female pacesetter’s time.

The resort noted that: “The purpose of the Mogul Challenge is to recognize technical superiority and athletic ability.”

The Bear Mountain base area was once again packed full of skiers and riders donning their finest party outfits in celebration of spring. The resort allowed tailgate set-up to commence Saturday morning at 6:30 a.m. Personal alcohol consumption was permitted outside of the lodge, but dispensing alcohol to others was prohibited, as doing so is against state law.

The resort also asked partygoers to “Please leave all non-service animals at home, including donkeys.” (If you don’t know that story, ask a local).
