College of St. Joseph’s weekly sports roundup

College of St. Joseph’s baseball and softball teams returned from the south this week after playing in a set of spring training games. The Fighting Saints baseball team played seven games in Virginia and came out with a 3-4 record. The softball team played their four games in North Carolina, but were unable to come home with a win.

March 18

The Fighting Saints baseball team matched up against Thomas Nelson and walked away with a 13-7 win. Tyler Kunzmann had 2 hits and 2 walks, along with 4 RBI’s. Softball paired up against Surry CC in a double-header and lost by a score of 10-2 in both games.

March 19

Baseball played in a rare triple-header and came out with 2 wins on March 19. In the first game, CSJ lost to Finger Lakes CC 11-2. The Saints rebounded from this game to take the next two games, beating Thomas Nelson 10-5 and Apprentice  8-7. Apprentice is USCAA opponent, so this game had impact on the overall standings in the league. Jordan Matos and Justin Lemanski combined for 7 hits and 3 RBI”s for the Saints. 

Women’s softball went head-to-head against Richard Bland College in a double header and lost both games, 15-2 and 13-5.

March 20

Fighting Saints baseball took on Apprentice and lost a close game 5-3. Tyler Kunzmann took the loss for the Saints in going 3 innings in relief giving up 2 earned runs.  

March 21

The baseball team ended their spring trip with losses against Apprentice and Tufts. The Saints played in another close game against Apprentice, but walked away with a 4-2 loss. The score was tied at 0-0 in the second game before starter Bill Brancatella was knocked out of the game in the third inning after being hit a with a line drive in the arm. The Saints went on to a 20-0 loss in seven innings.
