Wanted: A city pool

By Lani Duke

A survey of 993 respondents showed strong report for a municipal pool, even among people who have not used White’s Pool. The closing of the disintegrating pool leaves summer recreation with a gaping hole—a hole that 90 percent of the respondents want a pool to fill, Parks and Rec superintendent Cindi Wight announced at a meeting held Thursday, March 5. What form such a pool might take remains open, however. About one-fifth prefer an outdoor pool, while nearly a third prefer an indoor pool that could be used all year. Nearly 40 percent want both options. As with the library, pool usage would not be exclusive to city residents. Some 80 percent of the non-residents who responded to the survey say they would drive into Rutland City to use an indoor pool; nearly half said they would drive in for an outdoor one. Wight plans to develop committees to explore the possibilities.
