Chittenden Softball League: Rock Landscaping remains undefeated

By DJ Dave Hoffenberg

Rock Landscaping vs. First Stop Base Camp

Rock Landscaping kept up their winning ways and bashed around First Stop Base Camp in the process. Dylan Lee started the scoring in the top of the first and a couple of his teammates followed suit and they took a 3-0 lead. FSBC answered with two runs. That was as close as the game would get. Rock scored 10 runs in the second, batting through their order and then some. Every batter either got a hit, scored a run or both. Chris Major scored in the bottom but they stranded the bases loaded.

Rock only got two runs the rest of the way but it didn’t matter.

FSBC had a chance to come back in the third with two runners on but Smith Donelon got robbed by the biggest web gem of the year. He hit a sure home run but left fielder Garrett Tupper made a running, arm-stretched catch and smacked off the tree as he caught it but held on. It was pretty amazing to watch, unless you were Donelon.

Ed Mazzella scored for FSBC in the fourth but they stranded the bases loaded, yet again. Rock secured the mercy win, 15-4.

Dirty Mike & The Boys vs.
Flannels Fanatics

In some parts of the world, 13 is considered a lucky number. Not here and not for Dirty Mike & The Boys since they lost both of their games to 13 runs. First up they had a see-saw battle with the Flannels Fanatics and jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. FF got two back in the bottom. DMTB widened their lead to 6-2 in the second but the bottom half of the order produced for FF and they tied it 6-6. DMTB got shut out in the third and went down 1-2-3 including a double-play and a “Cold Beer K” looking to the appropriately named Beer Guy. Jared Hall went down looking in the bottom but FF took their first lead, 9-6.

DMTB then woke up their bats with four runs in the fourth to regain the lead 10-9 and then shut down FF 1-2-3 with a double-play of their own.

The fifth saw DMTB go down 1-2-3 and FF bat through their order, scoring four runs to regain the lead, 13-10. DMTB cut that deficit to one and kept it that way with another 1-2-3 inning. This was turning into the game of the year with three lead changes and two 1-2-3 innings a piece. On to the seventh inning we go with one more chance for DMTB. There were two quick outs but power hitter Matt Littler was up. He could tie this game up with one swing of the bat but instead it was another 1-2-3 inning for his team as he hit a dribbler to Hunter Pike who threw to first to give FF the 13-12 win.

Dirty Mike & The Boys vs.
First Stop Base Camp

In DMTB next game, Littler pitched for first time ever. He was “en fuego” to start, limiting FSBC to one hit over three innings with a major “CBK” to Chris Major in the third. There was nothing bad for DMTB in their three innings because they scored 9 runs.

FSBC got on the board in the fourth with three runs. They exchanged runs in the next two innings to make it an 11-4 lead for DMTB going into the seventh inning.

Three outs and this game is over but FSBC had other ideas. They completely batted through their order, saving the best for last, scoring nine runs. Every player got a hit and/or a run except for Mad Max Rowe who suffered a “CBK.” This was their first lead of the game and the only one they needed to get their first win 13-11.

Rock Landscaping vs. Flannels Fanatics

While the number 13 proved to be unlucky for DMTB, 15 was lucky for Rock Landscaping who won both their games with that many runs. FF welcomed back Brett “The No Hit Man” Regimbald who “CBK’d” in his first at-bat but Troy “Cowboy” Gilbertson launched one deep to give FF a 3-0 lead. Rock tee’d up on Cowboy in the bottom with base hit after base hit going his way. It went many other ways too since they batted through their order. They capped off the first by shocking pitcher Ronzoni Hacker with Chad Lonergan’s grand slam to give Rock a 9-3 lead. FF had no answer in the second. DJ Dave Hoffenberg suffered a “CBK” and Regimbald ended the inning by stranding the bases loaded with a fly out.

FF played some good “D” in the second with both Ronnie Crosby and Regimbald recording web gems. Cowboy smacked his second home run of the game and Crosby singled in Judd Washburn to cut the deficit in half. They had a chance for more but both Ronzoni and DJ Dave failed with the bases loaded.

Rock made them pay for that with a six-run inning. It was a two-fer inning with two errors, two walks by Ronzoni and back-to-back sac’s from Buddy Bartlett and Josh Stevens. FF got two hits in the fourth and went down 1-2-3 in the fifth.

Rock kind of matched that, going down 1-2-3 in the fourth but getting two hits in the fifth. Regimbald snapped out of his slump in the seventh with a hit and a run scored. Unfortunately his team only managed one more run, off a sac from Cowboy.

Rock stayed undefeated with the 15-8 victory.
