KSM alpine skiers shine in competitions

KILLINGTON—Killington Mountain School alpine athletes had strong results over the Feb. 21-22 weekend, competing in both Middlebury and at home on Killington’s Highline trail.

The U14s were at Middlebury for a Council GS on Sunday, where Izzy Jenne took the win in the women’s race, with Bella Amico in second, Francesca Castellini in seventh, and Anja Kroon rounding out the top ten in ninth place. Nolan Dils won the men’s race, with Tanner Graves in second and Tanner Schultz in ninth.

KMS head of school Tao Smith’s twin daughters helped by handing out race medals to the winning athletes. There was a great deal of hugging and celebrating among the women, who realized they’d qualified for States, and the team was thrilled to win back the Beanpot. All of the U14 athletes either qualified for States or made it to the Shootout, which will be this weekend at Bromley. States will be held at Stratton.

Izzy Jenne and Bella Amico attended a Development Camp at Suicide Six this week, where the top six athletes from each council competed in four timed runs of GS and SL. Izzy won the GS, and Bella placed fifth. Izzy took second place in the SL, and Bella was seventh. The women said the camp was an awesome experience.

The U16 men competed in States this weekend at home in Killington, where Tommy Shantler took the sixth place spot in Sunday’s SL race, Marc Hartnett was ninth, and Paul Ferri was 15th. In Monday’s GS at Okemo, Bobby Ryan was 13th and Tommy was Shantler 16th. The U16 women were also at Okemo for States, where Becca Clark took a top ten spot in the GS. Next up for the U16 men and women is States, held at both Burke and Sugarbush, where they will compete in a Super G, SL, and GS.

The U18 women swept the podium in an Open FIS Super G at Sugarloaf on Tuesday, with Laurie Agnellet in first, Lily Hogan in second, and Ava Mattsson in third. Laurie and Ava went 1,2 in the Eastern Cup Super G race, as well. Ryan Znamierowski also had a top ten finish, taking ninth place in the men’s Eastern Cup race. Next up for the U18/21 men and women is a race this weekend at Pico.

Ava Mattsson qualified to compete in the speed events at U18 Nationals out in Copper, Colo.
