Fair Haven Historical Society honors Matthew Lyon during Vermont 250 celebrations

As part of Vermont’s 250th anniversary observances, the Fair Haven Historical Society continues to celebrate the life and contributions of one of the state’s most notable founding figures, Matthew Lyon. The Society has launched a series of educational and community engagement efforts throughout the spring to highlight Lyon’s impact on the town and the early days of Vermont’s statehood.

In preparation for local 4th graders’ visit to Fort Ticonderoga, Society member Walter Sperr introduced students to Lyon’s legacy as a Green Mountain Boy and entrepreneur. Lyon once operated a range of businesses in Fair Haven—including a forge, grist mill, paper mill, and newspaper. He was the focus of interactive demonstrations that helped students better understand early American industry and innovation. Stations showcasing hydroelectric power and metalwork provided hands-on learning opportunities.

The Society also took part in Castleton’s celebration of Ethan Allen’s historic stop there on May 9, which marked 250 years since Allen and the Green Mountain Boys planned their successful capture of Fort Ticonderoga. Fair Haven residents joined Castleton’s parade, reinforcing the shared regional history of the Revolutionary War era.

Recognition came to the Fair Haven Historical Society this spring as well. The League of Local History Societies and Museums honored the group for its quarterly newsletter, edited by Ceil Hunt. Hunt accepted the award at the annual meeting alongside President Victoria Angis. In addition, Lorraine Brown was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for her enduring contributions to the Society.

Music and history blended during Fair Haven’s recent Spring Fling when John Daly—known for bringing historical figures to life through song—performed in character as Matthew Lyon. Daly also joined the Society’s themed float, which earned second place in the parade. The float was created by Jay and Lorraine Brown, with Lorraine also outfitting Daly in period-appropriate attire. Daly is scheduled to return in October for an event tied to Vermont’s Charter Day.
