Saturday, June 7, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. — QUECHEE — The Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) invites families, nature lovers, and curious minds of all ages to Remarkable Reptile Day, a full-day event celebrating the fascinating world of reptiles. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., guests can enjoy hands-on activities, live animal encounters, educational games, and engaging science presentations — all included with general admission.
Designed to both entertain and educate, Remarkable Reptile Day provides visitors with an opportunity to explore the unique adaptations and roles of reptiles in ecosystems across Vermont and beyond. Live appearances by snakes, turtles, and lizards will be featured throughout the grounds, including presentations from organizations such as the Vermont Natural History Museum and Uncharted Wild.
“We’re thrilled to host experts from the Orianne Society, the Vermont Herpetological Atlas, and Cold-Blooded Crusaders,” said a VINS representative. “Their insight into local conservation efforts and animal care is a highlight for anyone passionate about protecting Vermont’s native species.”
All-day stations ( 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) will include:
Cold-Blooded crafts: Reptile-inspired art projects in the August Pavilion.
Reptile games: Active games and water-based fun near the Arc sculpture.
Know your reptiles!: A quiz and learning station on the Forest Canopy Walk.
Meet live animals: Interact with educators, get up close to reptiles.
Scheduled presentations throughout the day will explore common reptile myths, the science behind turtle conservation, and the diversity of snakes in Vermont. Highlights include:
“Reptiles of the World” shows at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. by Uncharted Wild
“Turtles of Vermont” with Kiley Briggs of the Orianne Society at noon
“Snakes of Vermont” with Ira Powsner of the Vermont Herpetological Atlas at 2 p.m.
“Reptiles of New England” with the Vermont Natural History Museum at 3 p.m.
Families can also learn about responsible reptile ownership from Cold-Blooded Crusaders, a local pet rescue organization dedicated to rehoming and educating the public about exotic pets.
