Teen dies in late night rollover car crash, three others injured

PROCTOR—On Thursday, July 9, at approximately 3:18 a.m., troopers from the Vermont State Police – Rutland Barracks were assigned to a single vehicle crash with entrapment and ejection on West Street, in Proctor.

Through investigation it was determined Gabe Capen, 21, from Pownal, was operating the vehicle, a 2000 Saab 93, traveling south on West Street. According to police, Capen swerved and lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle’s left side struck an embankment on the east side of the road and flipped multiple times before coming to a position of uncontrolled rest on the roof. Capen sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Rutland Regional Medical Center (RRMC). Passengers Tatiana Goulette, 23, from Rutland City, and Kassandra Boardman, 18, from Rutland City, were ejected from the vehicle and transported to RRMC for non-life threatening injuries. The nature of the injuries were listed at “head injury, road rash.”

The final passenger, Kianna E. Peters, 18, from Pownal, was pronounced dead on scene.

Only Capen, the driver, was reportedly wearing a seat belt.

The Vermont State Police were assisted on scene by Rutland Town Police Department, Regional Ambulance Service, Proctor Fire Department, Rutland Town Fire Department, and Rutland City Fire Department.
