Bridgewater taxes up slightly, appropriation requests increase

By Curt Peterson

Bridgewater voters are being asked to approve a municipal budget of  $1,267,766 (of which $763,546 is to be raised by taxes). This is an 8.1% increase over the current budget. The estimated combined town and school tax rate is up 2.15%, to $2.14 per $100 of assessed property value. For example, the owner of a $250,000 home would pay $5,350 in taxes.

Also on the ballot, the Select Board is asking for approval to borrow up to $190,000 for a replacement highway department truck, which will be paid for from the Equipment Reserve Fund.

Voters will also be asked to approve eight appropriations totaling $21,750. Last year’s total was $20,790. The Woodstock Area Council on Aging (Thompson Senior Center) request has been increased $560, from $6,040 to $6,600. Other increased appropriations include Senior Solutions ($200 increase to $500 total), and Ottauquechee Health Foundation ($500 to $1,500 total).

Lynne Bertram is planning to run again for a three-year Select Board seat, according to Bridgewater Town Clerk Nancy Robertson.

Voters are directed to convene at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, March 3, at The Bridgewater Community Center. The 2019 Town Meeting was held at the Grange Hall.

Speaking of taxes, payments will be due on or before Aug. 5 and Nov. 4. Robertson said there is no “grace period” for tax payments in Bridgewater – unpaid taxes begin to accrue interest and penalties the day following the due date.
